Abstract

The revival at Pandita Ramabai’s Mukti Mission in Kedgaon, India, has gained wide currency as one of the birthplaces of global Pentecostalism — and it preceded Azusa Street by a year. Suarsana reads the episode from a postcolonial perspective and problematises the very category: he asks how far “Pentecostal” is a description of what happened at Mukti in 1905 and how far it is a label applied retrospectively by a movement in search of its own origins. A necessary counterweight to any monogenetic account of Pentecostal beginnings.
