Alpha with Angela: A Free Koine Greek Video Course, Openly Licensed

There is a sentence on the front page of this project that deserves quoting for how unusual it is in theological education: free, no signups, no trials, no tiers. Asked whether the videos will eventually move behind a subscription, the site answers plainly that they never will.

Alpha with Angela, published as Free Greek. Forever. by Betheden Ministries, is a video course in Koine Greek built on the same principle as its Hebrew sibling: the learner acquires the language by understanding it, not by memorising paradigms first.

The method, and the argument behind it

Traditional Greek instruction descends from nineteenth-century Latin pedagogy: decline, conjugate, translate. It produces students who can recite the aorist passive and still cannot read a paragraph without a lexicon. The communicative approach inverts the order, supplying comprehensible input long before terminology.

In practice the learner meets a Greek sentence attached to an image or a gesture, and understands it before knowing why it is built that way. Grammar arrives later as a description of something already familiar — which is the order in which every human being has ever learned a first language.

Scope and licence

The course is planned at roughly three hundred lessons, released progressively, with downloadable versions alongside the streaming ones. The material carries a Creative Commons BY-SA licence, which matters more than it may appear: a teacher may legally show these videos in a seminary classroom, a church may host them, and a translator may subtitle them into another language.

That licence is why the sister Hebrew course already exists in more than a dozen languages. Open licensing is what turns a good course into infrastructure.

How to work through it

  • Do not translate. The instinct to render every clause into English defeats the method. Sit with the Greek until it means something directly.
  • Short and daily. Twenty minutes a day beats a long weekend session, because acquisition rewards frequency.
  • Repeat before advancing. Rewatching is the mechanism, not a sign of failure.
  • Read John 1 early. Once the article and the present indicative are familiar, open the Gospel of John: it is the gentlest real text in the New Testament.
  • Then add a reference grammar. Wallace or Mounce will repay you tenfold once your ear already knows the language they describe.

Its limits

This is an entry, not a degree. It does not address textual criticism, it does not teach the critical apparatus, and it will not prepare anyone for a doctoral seminar on the Septuagint. Nor does it replace systematic study of verbal morphology, which exegesis eventually demands.

What it does is remove the barrier at the door, which is where the overwhelming majority of students are lost. Once Greek stops being a cipher and becomes a language, grammar ceases to be punishment.

Begin

Watch the first ten lessons before judging the method. They cost roughly two hours, and nothing else.
