Abstract
Within early Pentecostalism, Mark 16:9–20 shaped practice and proclamation to an inordinate degree: “these signs shall follow” served simultaneously as a summons to worldwide mission and as a litmus test for the authenticity of Pentecostal experience. Drawing on textual criticism, literary analysis, canonical criticism and Wirkungsgeschichte, the authors trace that reception history and ask what a responsible Pentecostal hermeneutic should make of a passage whose textual standing is contested. Thomas is general editor of the Pentecostal Commentary Series.
