Abstract

A critical engagement with the practice of prophecy in Southern African Pentecostalism, written from within the tradition rather than against it. Kgatle examines the commercialisation of prophetic ministry and the concentration of authority in the prophet’s person, and asks what safeguards the New Testament itself supplies. The essay is a working example of the problem of discernment: in a movement where charismatic manifestation is taken as credential, the question of how the community tests the spirit becomes decisive rather than peripheral.
