The Gospel on the Margins: The Reception of Mark in the Second Century

Abstract
Kok surveys the second-century reception of Mark, from Papias of Hierapolis to Clement of Alexandria, and finds the patristic writers hesitant to embrace the Gospel because they perceived it as too easily adapted to rival Christian factions. He therefore reads the story of Mark’s Petrine origins as a second-century move by the emerging orthodox church to assert ownership of a suspect text — a direct corrective to more optimistic arguments, including Richard Bauckham’s inclusio of eyewitness testimony.
