Perichoresis: Trinitarian and Confessional Theology, Open Access
Perichoresis is the theological journal of Emanuel University of Oradea, the only state-accredited Baptist university in Europe. It is listed in the DOAJ, has been open access since 2012, and charges no publication fees.
The editorial line is stated plainly rather than hidden: traditionally conservative, trinitarian, Protestant and evangelical. Knowing a journal’s commitments in advance is a service to the reader, not a limitation.
Why the name is the programme
Perichoresis — from perichōrēsis (περιχώρησις) — is the technical term for the mutual indwelling of the three persons of the Trinity, the idea that each fully contains and interpenetrates the others without confusion. Choosing it as a title announces where the journal locates the centre of Christian doctrine.
For anyone working on the Spirit, that matters. Pneumatology done badly detaches the Spirit from the Trinity and turns him into an impersonal power or an experience. A trinitarian journal is a useful discipline against exactly that drift.
Where it sits in this section
It is the counterweight to the Pentecostal titles listed here. Not because it opposes them, but because it works in a different register: confessional and dogmatic rather than contextual and experiential.
Reading the two together is the exercise that produces a theologian rather than a partisan. Enfim, a doctrine that only survives among people who already agree with it has not been tested.
Practical notes
- Search by doctrine. The journal is organised around classical loci, so searching “Trinity” or “atonement” is more productive than searching a contemporary theme.
- Mind the European frame. The authors argue against European secularism and Orthodoxy, not against Brazilian religious pluralism. The interlocutor is different from yours.
- Use it for precision of vocabulary. Dogmatic journals are where technical terms are used carefully, which is the fastest way to learn to use them yourself.
