Bill Mounce: Free Greek Tools from the Author of Basics of Biblical Greek

If you have ever opened a first-year Greek grammar in English, there is a good chance it was Basics of Biblical Greek. Bill Mounce wrote the textbook that much of the English-speaking seminary world has used for three decades, and he keeps a substantial part of his material open to anyone.

What is genuinely free

The site offers the foundations of the language at no cost: the history of Greek, the alphabet, diphthongs and punctuation, presented as structured pages rather than teasers. There is a free Greek dictionary with concordance data showing where each word occurs in Scripture, a first-year online class, and a separate site aimed at children.

Two running features are worth following on their own: a Greek word of the day and a verse of the day, both published as short entries. They serve as maintenance for anyone whose formal study has ended and whose vocabulary is quietly eroding.

Be clear about what is paid

Honesty about the boundary matters. The full video lectures accompanying Basics of Biblical Greek are a commercial product, sold with periodic discounts. The free tier is real and substantial, but it is not the complete course, and nobody should arrive expecting otherwise.

This is a fair arrangement rather than a bait — the reference tools, the dictionary and the alphabet material stay open, while classroom instruction is sold. Knowing which is which lets you plan the path instead of discovering the wall halfway up.

Where Mounce fits in a study plan

  • As a dictionary. The free lexicon with concordance links answers the everyday question of where else a word appears, without opening paid software.
  • As a grammar reference. Even for students trained elsewhere, Mounce supplies the shared terminology of English-language Greek instruction.
  • As maintenance. The word and verse of the day cost a minute and keep vocabulary from decaying.
  • As a bridge to the software. His categories map directly onto what Logos and Accordance display, which shortens the learning curve of the tools themselves.

A note on what free has made possible

Few scholars have given away as much high-quality language material as Mounce has. Taken together with the openly licensed video courses listed elsewhere in this section, a determined student can now reach genuine reading competence without spending anything, which simply was not true twenty years ago.

The remaining obstacle is no longer access — it is the discipline to show up daily for two years, and no amount of free material supplies that.
